Important Note On Snowloads
Cold frame structures are made from quality steel materials and commonly used by the Horticulral Industry in the Pacific Northwest. Now that you have constructed the greenhouse/cold frame tofit your needs, and complied with all local, state or federal requirements regulating the construction (or use), don't forget about a snow removal policy! As with any structure, unheated greenhouses and cold frames, can be affected by snow accumulations because snow and water can add significant weight to the roof system. As snowfall can vary depending on your geographical area, if you do not provide heat or ensure snow accumulations are removed on a regular basis, your greenhouse/cold frame can collapse.
For example: A roof area of 24 ft wide x 50 ft length x 1/2 ft (.5) = 600 cu/ft. Multiply the 600 cu/ft x 30 lbs per square foot (average weight of snow) = 18,000 pounds of weight on the roof structure.
Protect your investment - plan ahead.
Ensure you have a snow removal policy!
